Madikeri is the headquarters of the Coorg or Kodagu district in the state of Karnataka. It is a hill
station known also by the name of Mercara. According to popular historical facts, Madikeri was
earlier known as Muddu Raja Keri or the town of Muddu Raja, a king who ruled Coorg from
1633 to 1687. Muddu Raja, a ruler of the Haleri dynasty (1600-1834 AD), built the Madikeri
Fort located in this area.
