Explore Hills Destination Darjeeling - By Priya Arora

At the foothills of Himalayas, Darjeeling stands proudly. Undoubtedly this is one of the dream destinations to almost every tourist. Darjeeling has been my favourite hill town since childhood for which I have already been there for several times. Surrounded by the snow-covered mountains and infinite slopes draped with bright and lush green tea gardens, it only takes one visit to the ‘queen of Himalayas’ to fall in love! You can easily travel to Darjeeling by Air as the nearest airport is Bagdogra, or also can follow the train route or the road.
The majestic natural beauty of Darjeeling enthrals the tourists with its alluring beauty of panoramic view, the snow-capped peak of the Kanchenjunga and lush greenery all around the place. One of the famous things to do here is to be the witness of the breath-taking view of Tiger hill at dawn. Well, you have to reach the place before the dawn to see the most spectacular sunrise ever as the surroundings turn into a striking crimson color when the sunrays fall on the mighty Mount Kanchenjunga Peak.

  • Don’t forget to take the fairy-tale ride of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as ‘Toy Train’ which covers the path between Darjeeling and Silliguri. The mesmerizing view of this place while riding the toy train is absolutely breath-taking and will definitely stunned each and every one. The trip to Darjeeling will be incomplete without having a cup of locally brewed chai at the tea estate such as Happy Valley, Makaibari, Glenburn etc., or getting down amidst the plantations to pluck a few tea leaves yourself - you are free to take your pick!
Besides if you are a great foodie like I and wondering about it then let me assure you that Darjeeling has plenty of options to cater to your taste buds – Momos, Thukpa, Nepali Thali and many more. There are also few interesting places in Darjeeling to be around in including monasteries, botanical gardens, a zoo, and the Darjeeling-Rangeet Valley Passenger Ropeway cable car which happens to be the longest Asian cable car. The ideal time to travel Darjeeling is the summer months from April to June. But I personally prefer to visit the beautiful town during winter months from October to December, as it provides the cool climes during this time.
